IWAKUNI, Japan - Lt. Col. Michael D. Gonzalez relinquished command of Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 12 to Lt. Col. Kolter R. Miller during a change of command ceremony that took place inside Hangar 6030 aboard Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, June 9, 2014.

Under Gonzalez’s command, MALS-12 received the, Donald E. Davis Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron of the Year Award in 2013.

“To your left and to your right, you see some of the proudest and best trained Marines I’ve worked with in my 19 years in the Marine Corps,” said Gonzalez. “No matter what you do in your (military occupational specialty,) the fact you’re here and giving it your all; that is deterrence enough to prevent America’s enemies from knocking on our door in the middle of the night. That’s why I’m so proud to be standing in front of you today.”

Taking his first command position, Miller said he is looking forward to new opportunities not available at his past duty stations.

“I look forward to working with Marines most,” said Miller. “Coming from Quantico and Washington, D.C., I didn’t have a lot of young Marines that I was able to influence. In my 22 years of service, this is the place I have worked my tail off to get to and be able to teach, mentor and watch Marines learn and become our future Marine Corps.”

Miller stated he is confident about carrying on the legacy and traditions Gonzalez left behind.

“My biggest challenge is going to be improving upon the already high state of readiness and success that Lieutenant Colonel Gonzalez and his team has built in his time as commanding officer,” said Miller. “We are going to continue to provide aggressive, safe support to Marine Aircraft Group 12, and I want to continue to make the Marines of MALS-12 bullet proof.”

Miller’s personal decorations include: the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with two gold stars, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with one gold star.
