RUKLA, Lithuania – Soldiers with the Pennsylvania National Guard arrived June 7 to train alongside Lithuanian Land Forces in military and weapons tactics for Operation Saber Rattle.

Guardsmen with Troop C, 2nd Squadron, 104th Cavalry Regiment, 56th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 28th Infantry Division arrived with four of their Stryker assault vehicles to familiarize Lithuanian Land Forces with the operation of the eight-wheeled vehicle along with other U.S. weapons and equipment.

U.S. Soldiers were also given the opportunity to familiarize themselves with Lithuanian weapons and equipment.

The Pennsylvania National Guard has worked with Lithuania since 1993 when they where associated, through the National Guard State Partnership Program. The National Guard State Partnership Program (SPP) is a United States Department of Defense program managed by the National Guard that links U.S. States with partner countries around the world for the purpose of supporting the security cooperation objectives of the geographic Combatant Commands.

“We are looking forward to working with our NATO allies and building our state partnership with the Lithuanians,” said 1st Sgt. Richard Atkinson.

According to Atkinson, this exercise is a joint training mission intended to provide U.S. and NATO allies with an opportunity to interact and train on each other’s equipment and weapons systems.

“One of our goals is to enhance interoperability,” said Atkinson. “We want to share the strength and solidarity of NATO.”

The 56th Stryker Brigade Combat Team is the only National Guard unit to operate Stryker assault vehicles. The vehicles were flown into Vilnius, Lithuania, from Pennsylvania using a C-5 flown by the 176th Air Wing of the West Virginia Air National Guard.
