MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – The Area 2 indoor pool aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune now offers group exercise sessions for Marines and Sailors looking to stay in shape during the months to come.
“The group exercises at the pool are for all age groups and fitness levels,” said Nicole Freres, group exercise instructor and fitness specialist at a High Intensity Tactical Training Center aboard Camp Lejeune. “The classes help improve your physical fitness level and allow you to push yourself more.”
Freres is one of the instructors who leads the deep water HITT class through a variety of exercises.
“I like to challenge the patrons,” said Freres.
Freres leads exercises to include running and sprinting in the water, a full-body circuit course, laps and more.
“It’s a good full-body and cardio workout if you push yourself,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Stephen Frugé, a hospital corpsman with 2d Dental Battalion. “I’ve seen dramatic improvements with my running, especially long distance running. Swimming for an hour makes an hour of running easier.”
Aquatic fitness provides advantages such as more resistance, a cooling effect and lower impact exercises. Sessions also provide injured personnel the ability to work out without further injuring themselves.
“I love the deep water high intensity tactical training,” said Frugé. “It’s perfect for all fitness levels because you can do it at your own pace, and there are not a lot of group exercises that allow that.”
The Area 2 pool offers two different group exercise sessions. The deep water HITT is held Mondays and Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The AMP-IT class is held Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
