FORT STEWART, Ga. - The full moon slowly disappeared and the sun began to rise early this morning as more than 1,000 3rd Infantry Division Soldiers packed Trent Field at Fort Stewart, Georgia to celebrate the Army’s 239th birthday with a 4.2 mile run led by the Deputy Commanding General for Support, Brig. Gen. Pete L. Jones, and the Division Command Sergeant Major, Command Sgt. Maj. Christopher G. Gilpin.
The 4.2 mile run was full of energy as every unit from 3rd ID made its way around the installation sounding off to the familiar rhythm of traditional Army cadence. The massive formation celebrated the Army’s 239th birthday in classic Army style – with hard work, sweat and dedication to the mission. As the formation made its way back around and closed out the run, they were greeted by the equal hard work and dedication of the culinary specialists of the 3rd ID in the form of celebratory sweets.
Each dining facility had prepared their own version of a birthday cake to be judged prior to the run on their taste, appearance and display. While it was a close competition and many amazing pieces of art were presented, only one could be declared the winner. The overall winning cake to serve as the Army’s 239th birthday cake for the 3rd ID belonged to the renowned 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team “Vanguard” dining facility.
In keeping with tradition, Jones and Gilpin were joined by the oldest Soldier, Sgt. 1st Class Julio T. Arteaga of the 3rd Sustainment Brigade, and the youngest Soldier, Pfc. Reuven A. Miranda of Division Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, to simultaneously slice the cake with a ceremonial saber.
Today’s activities are to honor and celebrate the establishment of the Army 239 years ago, June 14, 1775, and to serve as a reminder to all Soldiers of the legacy that they represent.
