BALDWINSVILLE, N.Y. - New York Air National Guard officer and Baldwinsville resident Maureen Murphy has been promoted to colonel.
Murphy, who previously served in a number of positions at Hancock Field Air National Guard base, is currently serving as director of staff for the 6,000-member New York Air National Guard at New York National Guard headquarters in Latham. She is a full-time employee of the New York Air National Guard.
Murphy has been an Air Force officer since she was commissioned through the ROTC program in 1984.
She served as chief of operational intelligence at the 401st Tactical Fighter Wing at Torrejon Air Base, Spain, from 1984 to 1987 and then served as an instructor at the Air Force Intelligence School at Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas, from 1987 to 1988.
She transferred to the Air Force Reserve in 1988 and served as an individual mobilization augmentee with United States Air Forces Europe in Ramstein, Germany, from 1988 to 1993. She served as senior intelligence officer at the 174th Fighter Wing at Hancock Field Air National Guard Base from 1993 to 1996 before serving with the 32nd Air Intelligence Squadron, Ramstein Air Base, Germany, in a number of positions from 1996 to 2005.
From 2005 to 2007 Murphy served as intelligence officer for the New York Air National Guard's 152nd Air Operations Group and then served as operations staff officer, for the New York Air National Guard's 274th Air Support Operations Squadron.
From March 2012 to September 2013, Murphy served as director of staff for the 174th Attack Wing. She also served as the wing's Sexual Assault Response Coordinator.
She holds a bachelor's in political science from Duke University, and a Master of Philosophy in international relations from Cambridge University in England. She is a graduate of Air Command and Staff College, the Air War College, the Reserve Component National Security Course, and the Squadron Officer School, and Sexual Assault Response Coordinator Training.
Murphy's awards include several awards of the Meritorious Service Medal and the Air Force Achievement Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Joint Meritorious Unit Award, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Air Force Overseas Ribbon, the Air Force Expeditionary Service Ribbon, and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal.
She and her husband, Mark, a retired Air National Guard colonel, have three children: Ciara Cunningham of Golden, Colorado; Christiane, a student at Northeastern University; and Conor a student in the eighth grade.
