CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait – Often in a deployed environment, Soldiers look for humor in the little things; and sometimes they can seem hard to find. For one evening, though, they didn’t have to look too hard.

Jeff Capri’s Funny Forces, part of Armed Forces Entertainment, stopped in to spread some laughs to a theater full of service members stationed at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. The performance, which poked fun at deployed life, gave service members an opportunity to laugh and unwind for an evening.

“Soldiers, as an audience, are some of the best audiences we could come across because they’re the most appreciative audience we could perform for,” said Bob Kubota, a comedian with Armed Forces Entertainment.

Kubota said he enjoys interacting with Soldiers overseas because the offbeat professional relationships in the military are unique from those in the U.S.

“Coming overseas has given me a world education. It’s given me the ability to see what’s happening over here on my own and understand interpersonal relationships better,” Kubota said.
“It’s made me a much better comic.”

Kubota did his first comedy tour in 1996 with the USO and has since done more than twenty tours for Soldiers overseas.
One Soldier even returned to see Kubota a second time.

“I was here in 2010 and saw Bob [Kubota] perform,” said Chief Warrant Officer Brooke Finkenbinder, 160th South West Asia Cyber Center. “I saw him on the flyer for this show and had to come back and see him.”

Finkenbinder said the comedy shows in Kuwait are comparable to comedy shows he attends in the states, just tailored more toward the life of a deployed Soldier.

“We really appreciate these guys coming out here,” he said. “It brings us back to the states a little bit and gives us a chance to kick back for a few minutes and get a little taste of back home.”

Kubota said that he knows the Soldiers appreciate his work, and he appreciates theirs as well.

“Every so often we get letters from either the Soldiers or the parents of Soldiers thanking us for what we do,” said Kubota. “I always tell people that’s the most rewarding part about this.”
Soldiers stationed overseas deserve a good laugh and the comedians with Armed Forces Entertainment are happy to bring it—and that’s no joke.
