MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. – Maj. Gen. Steven Busby relinquished command of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing to Maj. Gen. Michael Rocco during a change of command ceremony aboard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif., June 17.

Busby took command of 3rd MAW Aug. 10, 2012, and is slated to take over as director for Strategy, Plans and Policy at U.S. Central Command in Tampa, Fla.

During his time as the commanding general, Busby introduced the Committed and Engaged Leadership initiative, an initiative designed to empower noncommissioned officers.

“The Marines of 3rd MAW far exceeded any expectations [my wife, Cindy] and I had,” said Busby. “To the Marines, Sailors, families and civilians of 3rd MAW: Cindy and I thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for forever changing our lives. Whatever we may have given you pales in comparison to what you have given us. Please take care of yourselves and take care of each other – Semper Fidelis.”

Rocco, incoming commanding general, previously worked as the director for Strategy and Plans Division under Plans, Policies and Operations at Headquarters Marine Corps.

“I would first like to thank the commandant for this opportunity,” said Rocco. “It truly feels like I’m coming home when I come here to 3rd MAW. I’ve watched from afar for the past five years and [it has] done everything from combat operations in Afghanistan to transitioning into new aircraft, and has done it magnificently.”

Rocco offered some words to the Marines now under his charge concerning the future of the aircraft wing.

“In the change of command narration, we talk about the passing of the colors and passing of total commitment – I promise you that you have total commitment from both me and [my wife, Susan],” said Rocco. “My last thoughts before I go to sleep at night and my first thoughts when I wake up in the morning will be how to take better care of you. It’s wonderful to be home.”
