    Defense Logistics Agency

FORT BELVOIR, Va. - The Defense Logistics Agency welcomed Jeff Curtis into the Senior Executive Service before family, friends, fellow employees, and current and past DLA leaders at the McNamara Headquarters Complex June 16.

Curtis became the executive director of DLA Logistics Operations’ Logistics Support Directorate in February and has shown he can handle the pressure that comes with being a top leader, DLA Director Navy Vice Adm. Mark Harnitchek said.

“We promote folks to this level because of their people skills, their leadership skills and their in-depth knowledge of the organization. At DLA, we depend on our SESes for their intelligence, their expertise and their leadership. They’re independent thinkers. They’re decisive, and they’re never afraid to give rock-solid recommendations,” the director said.

Curtis is one of just 21 SESes throughout the agency. He began his 27-year career with DLA in 1987 as a GS-4 procurement analyst for what is now DLA Land and Maritime in Columbus, Ohio. He has since worked in numerous areas ranging from operations and analysis to human resources and acquisition.

From September 2008 to January 2011, Curtis served as the director of DLA Strategic Plans and Policy, where he oversaw the agency’s strategic transformation initiatives. He later served as the executive director for DLA Logistics Operations’ Material, Policy, Process and Assessment Directorate and was responsible for such things as inventory management and retail integration.

“With Jeff’s leadership, we decided to rightsize our inventory by one-third and are still setting records today in material availability for our customers,” Harnitchek said. “When Jeff started this effort, we had about $15 billion worth of inventory. Today we have in the neighborhood of $10 or $11 billion. Our availability for repair parts was also around 86 to 87 percent. Today we’re at 90 percent.”

Curtis thanked fellow employees and leaders for the counsel and support they have offered him throughout his civil-service career.

“It was never a grand plan to be a logistician, to be an SES or be a senior part of the greatest logistics organization in the world,” he said. “[But] there’s no place I’d rather be than right here, right now.”
