CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait – On June 17, 3rd Medical Command (Deployment Support) Operational Command Post (Forward) leaders teamed up with 1st Theater Sustainment Command and the 452nd Combat Support Hospital to participate in an information exchange with the Kuwaiti National Guard food services branch.
Although this engagement is one of many medical exchanges that have occurred in partnership with the Kuwaiti National Guard, this is the first meeting that addressed the topic of soldier nutrition and educating troops on healthy eating and lifestyles. Food Services Branch Commander Lt. Col. Mubarak Marzooq, 1st Lt. Abdulaziz Talib, and 1st Lt. Abdullah represented the Kuwaiti National Guard.
The day began with a presentation by 3rd Medical Command (Deployment Support) Operational Command Post (Forward) Chief of Clinical Operations Lt. Col. Lesley Watts, and Chief of Health Services Human Resources Lt. Col. Sharlene Holladay. Holladay also serves as US Army Central’s dietetic consultant. The presentation consisted of an overview of the US Army Surgeon General’s performance triad program, which is supported by the Army Public Health Command.
“You cannot proficiently fire a weapon, build a bridge, carry a patient, or care for your fellow soldiers unless you are healthy and physically fit,” said Holladay. “Eating right and maintaining a high level of physical fitness is key to successful soldiering.”
Following the presentation, the Kuwaiti National Guard members visited the wellness center within the United States Military Hospital – Kuwait, took a brief tour of the Camp Arifjan dining facility, and received an overview of the army food program’s “Go for Green” initiative.
The group was joined by Chief Warrant Officer Three William Core, a 1st Theater Sustainment Command food adviser, who helped facilitate the orientation on how the “Go for Green” labeling program assists soldiers in making smarter, wiser food decisions.
“Exchanges on new topics – such as soldier nutrition and wellness – enable us to better our internal programs and how we communicate with our troops. Although our armies are unique in size, composition and structure, taking care of soldiers and encouraging better life choices is something that both of our dietetic professionals have in common,” said Lt. Col. Douglas Hurst, 3rd Medical Command (Deployment Support) Operational Command Post (Forward) civil affairs officer and information exchange coordinator.
