RENO, Nev. - The 152nd Airlift Wing, Reno, Nevada, was one of two Air National Guard units chosen to participate in Allied Forge.
The Nevada Air Guard’s 152nd Airlift Wing had nearly 50 Airmen and several of its aircraft in Corsica, France, RAF Mildenhall, U.K., and Cherbourg, France, in May and June to participate in the joint exercise Allied Forge and to assist with the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of D-Day. The exercise, led by the 82nd Airborne Division, included the the 152nd and 165th Air Guard Airlift Wings and is the first exercise designed to enhance bilateral capabilities between the United States’ military and the French Army's 11th Parachute Brigade.
The 152nd Airmen joined numerous other military units to mark the anniversary of D-Day on June 6. The original D-Day invasion in 1944, Operation Overlord, resulted in 160,000 Allied troops landing along a 50-mile stretch of the French coast. More than 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the operation. Overlord marked the opening of a second front in the European theater of operations during World War II and was beginning of the Allied march to Germany.
Aircraft from the Reno-based Air National Guard unit participated in the D-Day commemoration ceremony, held on June 8, near the "Iron Mike" drop zone, located outside of Sainte-Mère-Église, France.
Aircraft and paratroopers from more than 10 different countries participated in the commemoration drops.
