MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -- Marines and sailors looking for a way to improve their physical performance or simply looking for a new avenue to push themselves physically, can look into the explosive lifestyle of CrossFit.
CrossFit, according to www.crossfit.com, the workout style’s official website, is defined as that which optimizes fitness through constantly varied functional movements, performed at relatively high intensity.
Sgt. Michael Petersheim, a combat camera Marine with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, is an avid crossfitter and recently obtained his level one certification, which allows him to instruct others in CrossFit techniques.
“I want to start off by saying that CrossFit isn’t for everyone,” said Petersheim. “CrossFit requires maximum effort and a competitive spirit. If you can’t put forth that effort, then it isn’t for you.”
Developed by coach Greg Glassman over several decades, the exercise style requires the performer to maintain a high-level intensity over an extended period of time, with most workouts lasting over an hour.
Chief Warrant Officer 3 Carlos Alfonso, acting company commander for India Company, Headquarters and Support Battalion, is also a level one CrossFit trainer and full supporter of the style of fitness it provides.
“Those who are uninformed about CrossFit are usually the first to speak against it,” said Alfonso. “If you plan on getting into it then you need to do your research and check your ego at the door. Only then are you fully prepared to perform the mechanics, consistency and intensity CrossFit requires.”
Petersheim also spoke toward the competitive nature of CrossFit and the camaraderie it promotes amongst crossfitters.
“You get a sense of accomplishment after each workout, proportionate to the amount of effort you put into that session,” said Petersheim. “I like the competitive aspect of the workout, and it drives me to better myself.”
CrossFit places an emphasis on creating a basic foundation for athletic ability, meaning it is a form of functional fitness, a lot of which doesn’t require the use of heavy weights.
“CrossFit allows you to achieve the results that you want,” said Petersheim. “It is a fast-paced exercise that will give you exactly what you put into it.”
