    LANSING, Mich. – July 12-26, 2014, an estimated 5,000 Soldiers from five states are scheduled to converge on Camp Grayling Joint Maneuver Training Center, Michigan, to participate in an eXportable Combat Training Capability rotation in order to conduct artillery live-fire tables, participate in lane training and be evaluated.

    This summer will mark the first time active component units will be integrated with Reserve component units for validation during an XCTC rotation. Several Army National Guard units from Michigan, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and West Virginia will join active component 10th Mountain Division in the training lanes and will be evaluated by reserve component 1st Army for the exercise.

    Units conducting training include:

    • 3rd Battalion, 197th Field Artillery Regiment - New Hampshire National Guard
    • 1st Battalion, 182nd Field Artillery Regiment - Michigan National Guard
    • 1st Battalion, 103rd Field Artillery Regiment - Rhode Island National Guard
    • 1st Battalion, 119th Field Artillery Regiment - Michigan National Guard
    • 1st Battalion, 201st Field Artillery Regiment - West Virginia National Guard
    • 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division - Fort Drum, New York

    XCTC is a program of record used by the Army National Guard since 2005 to train more than 11 combat and functional brigades. XCTC is a cost-efficient, time-efficient option for delivering combat readiness training to Soldiers at or near their home stations. This scalable live-training program has proven effective for pre-mobilization forces, in accordance with the Army Force Generation model.

    During the three-week exercise, the 1-201st FA M109A6 Paladins and the 1-119th FA and 1-103rd FA M777A1 howitzers will be firing high-explosive, smoke, illumination, and white phosphorus smoke 155 mm rounds. The 1-182nd FA and 3-197th FA M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) will be firing reduced range practice rockets. The 1-87 IN BN, 10th MTN will be firing 81mm and 120mm high-explosive and white phosphorus smoke mortars rounds. Other weapons to be fired on CGJMTC during the exercise include the M4 and M16 rifles and M249, M240B, and M2 .50-caliber machine guns.

    In summation, 192 rockets will be fired over a four-day span and more than 3,000 155mm rounds will be fired over the duration of the exercise.

    Located in northern Michigan, Camp Grayling is the largest National Guard joint training center in the U.S. covering 147,000 acres crossing three counties and training not only active and reserve components of the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard, but also more than 100 law enforcement agencies and units from Canada, Latvia, the United Kingdom, Hungary and Serbia.

    “Camp Grayling is one of our nation’s best-kept secrets. We provide tough, realistic joint and combined arms training for all four seasons,” stated Col. Erich Randall, garrison commander, Camp Grayling. “Reserve and active component commanders can utilize Camp Grayling’s Combined Arms Collective Training Facility, the Urban Assault Course, and the Live-Fire Shoot House that portray the complexity and human dimension of the modern battlefield. Camp Grayling has everything necessary to assist military leaders in developing trained, competent Soldiers for full-spectrum operations.”

    Camp Grayling is host to many training scenarios and ranges to include: pistol, shot gun, machine gun, mortar and artillery ranges, infantry squad and platoon battle course, urban assault course, live fire shoot house, air gunnery range, unmanned aircraft systems and unmanned aerial vehicles, light and heavy demolitions, and a combined arms collective training facility.
