COLUMBIA, S.C. - The South Carolina National Guard celebrated the 96th birthday of the Warrant Officer Corps at a ceremony in the Adjutant General's building, Columbia, S.C., July 9, 2014.
“The ceremony pays tribute to our rich tradition and it’s an opportunity to recognize all our warrant officers, young and old, in our state and nation for all they do,” said Chief Warrant Officer 4 Kent Puffenbarger, command chief warrant officer for the S.C. National Guard.
Warrant officers are known as the experts in their fields. They are technically the most proficient in their specialized Army skills and share their knowledge with enlisted Soldiers to ensure the success of the mission and promote training opportunities.
Warrant officers were first introduced to the Army in 1918 as Army mine planters, as part of the Coast Artillery Corps. However it is stated that Napoleon used warrant officers as a communications bridge between enlisted and officer personnel in his military.
The ceremony was held in front of the 263 Coast Artillery Corps flag, attended by members of all ranks.
“It is very fitting we join together and cut the cake in front of this flag,” said Puffenbarger. “Many don’t know but the legacy of those who served as a warrant officers include 2 Medal of Honor recipients and one astronaut.
