CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa - The Camp Foster Commissary hosted a Healthy Lifestyle Festival and Farmer’s Market event June 2-5.

The event promotes a healthy lifestyle, physical fitness and health awareness while featuring free food, music, prizes and more.

“We do our best to promote healthy living,” said Linda Potter, a produce department manager for the commissary. “It’s all about being aware of your health. (This event helps people prepare) fruits and vegetables in a way that tastes good.”

The event taught different, unique ways to prepare fruits and vegetables by using dipping sauces and salsas.

“The watermelon salsa was delicious and healthy,” said Pfc. Joshua M. Tausendfreundt, a chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear defense specialist with Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 1, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force. “It is my favorite thing out here, and I definitely recommend it.”

The commissary tries to have food demonstrations once a week to show different ways of making healthy food taste better, according to Potter, a Las Vegas, Nevada, native.

“Guests get to try a lot of different demonstrations, and it’s a lot of different things they thought they would never eat,” said Potter. “It’s not just about eating healthy, but it is about your overall health.”

The event coordinators invited different program’s representatives to spread information, which included U.S. Naval Hospital Okinawa and the Single Marine Program.

The SMP had a different approach on a healthy life style with a focus was about keeping away from harmful substances, according to Shelly Johnson, a coordinator with the Single Marine Program.

“Drug free and alcohol free; a healthy lifestyle is what we are pushing for,” said Johnson, a Bridgetown, Barbados, native.
Kids of all ages and their families saw firsthand that eating healthy can be fun and taste delicious.

“The participation is great, it was very successful,” said Potter. “We are very happy with the turn out and seeing everyone having a good time.”

The informative event had a larger turn out than expected making it largest healthy lifestyle event the commissary has had to date.

“With the different information out here and the foods they had, it really showed me different ways and more taste filled ways to stay healthy,” said Tausendfreundt, a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, native.
