MARINE CORPS BASE HAWAII - An estimated 4,000 Marine Corps Base Hawaii community members gathered at Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course July 25, 2014 to tee off, cool off and take a load off during Klipper Bash 6, hosted by Marine Corps Community Services Hawaii.
Many guests at the bash sampled golf equipment from several vendors and hit a few balls across the green. Lines were long in Samuel Adams Bar and Grill and at booths outside in the scorching heat.
“Great turnout and great weather,” said Kevin Kashiwai, golf operations supervisor and assistant head golf professional at the golf course. “We’ve got a major crowd today, the fun rides and Tiki Island are open to the (children) now and they’re all piling in.”
At Tiki Island, children savored cool, colorful shave ice, rode the Pirate’s Revenge ride or jumped around in bounce houses. Others opted to have their faces painted.
Sgt. Ryan Avery, a C-20 crew chief with Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay kept his daughter, Aryana, occupied with a balloon sword fight. Avery’s family recently moved to MCB Hawaii, and they live just a short walk away from the golf course and their first Klipper Bash.
“It’s awesome,” Avery said of the event. “(Events like these) gets (the kids) out of the house.”
The bash also had volunteers helping with the events, like Lance Cpl. Mitchell Stimson, an electronic maintainer from 3rd Radio Battalion, sporting flecks of paint on his face.
“I love working with kids,” Stimson said. “(Volunteering at this event) reminds me of (getting my face painted) when I was young.”
Stimson said the hardest design he’s had to paint on a child’s face had to be a monster truck.
For Ashley Miller, face painting was the best part about the Klipper Bash. The 8 year old sat patiently still while Stimson dabbed blue and white paint on her face for a a sea-themed design.
Radio personality Scotty B from Star 101.9, emceed the event, announcing giveaways and introducing entertainers like local band Sunway.
As evening approached, families and friends brought out lawn chairs and mats as the U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific Band’s Rock Band covered songs such as “All of Me” by John Legend and “Barracuda,” by Heart. Guests then scooted closer to the stage for a close-up view of local band, The Green.
“I think all in all it’s turned out to be a great event,” Kashiwai said. “(We’re) taking care of the Marines and sailors and their families and I think (they had) a good time.”
