SIGONELLA, Italy - Lt. Gen. Robert Neller, Commander, U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Europe, visited here, Aug. 9, to meet service members with the second iteration of Special-Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force Africa 14.
The service members currently assigned to SP-MAGTF Africa 14 are tasked with supporting Marine Forces Europe and Africa and U.S. Africa Command by carrying out theater security cooperation missions in various African countries in order to build partnerships and the capacity to address regional security concerns.
Lt. Gen. Neller visited the members of SP-MAGTF Africa 14 to explain to them the importance of their coming missions and answer any questions they might have.
“This is a great opportunity [for you],” said Neller. “[While on your theater security cooperation missions] develop relationships with the locals, learn about their culture and teach them about yours.”
Neller also discussed current events in the areas where SP-MAGTF Africa will be operating, and the necessity for the service members to be in those places.
After answering questions from service members, Neller gave a few words of encouragement and advice.
“Right now, every one of you, whether you believe it or not, you’re representing the United States,” said Neller. “I would be remised if I didn’t thank you for your service. We in uniform represent probably one third of one percent of Americans. There are thousands who have gone before us, and they’re all watching what we do, good luck.”
While strengthening Marine Forces Africa and USAFRICOM's ability to assist partner nations in addressing security challenges in the region, SP-MAGTF Africa continues to build relationships with their community by participating in events like National Night Out in Sigonella, Italy.
