CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait – The distinct ‘swish’ sound and the repetitive ‘thuds’ of dribbling reverberated off the walls of the basketball court, as the teams warmed up, Aug. 16. Team U.S.A. wearing red jerseys with white lettering, practiced on one end, while team Kuwait, wearing green jerseys with gold lettering on the other.

The U.S. and Kuwait National Guard basketball teams met once again at the Zone one basketball court here, for a friendly game of hoops.

“Ever since we played the Kuwait National Guard back in May, I have kept in touch with the players,” said Sgt. 1st Class Demara M. Boone, a player on the U.S. basketball team, and responsible for coordinating these exhibition games. “About two weeks ago one of the players sent me an email and wanted to come and play again and I accepted the challenge, and made it happen.”

After the first half the score was a close 28-21, in favor of the U.S., but as the game came to a close, team U.S.A. pulled away, winning 53-39.

“Winning is always a good thing but I think the majority of the guys were just happy to be a part of the team and to have a chance to experience playing another country in basketball,” Boone said.

“Anytime we get a chance to participate in any type of event with our Host Nation is wonderful,” Boone said. “The Kuwait National Guard team was very competitive, and just like us, they love the game of basketball.”

A friendly exhibition basketball game, win or lose can have a positive impact on the relationship and interoperability of the U.S. and host nation. Through these repeated engagements, the bond, trust, and friendship between the U.S. and Kuwait continues to expand.

Boone added that this will not be the last time these teams get together and play a friendly game of B-ball.

“We will continue to schedule basketball games for both men and women and continue to build a stronger friendship with our Host Nation.”
