SENTUL, Indonesia – People come together to assist the United Nations on peacekeeping missions from around the world. For Philippine army Capt. Myrvin Gargar, training events like the Global Peace Operations Initiative Capstone Training Event Garuda Canti Dharma turns out to be a huge plus for him and his soldiers.

“Participating in a training event like this is a huge advantage for us because we get to see other countries go through the same training as us,” said Gargar. “We have the opportunity to see multiple countries solve the same scenario differently.”

Diversity is common amongst UN peacekeeping missions, but when you pull so many people together from so many countries it’s very important to establish a standard.

“Establishing a standard is very important, in the sense that, these people are the ones we will be working with when we are on a United Nations missions,” said Gargar. “We will be expecting the same standard of training and it will be very easy for us to work with each other as well as see familiar faces.”

The training events here at GPOI are current to the situations going on in the world now and Gargar believes that training benefits the soldiers of the Philippines.

“This training is very important to my soldiers,” he said. “It’s always important to refresh this training, and for my soldiers and my country, this training will remind them constantly on what they will do on a UN mission.”

The country of the Philippines currently has soldiers deployed to Syria, Libya and Haiti with military observers in India, Pakistan and the Ivory Coast. Soldiers are deployed to locations around the world and the training here is a reminder of the cultural diversity that UN missions present.

“It is great to train along side the different cultures of the world. It not only reinforces our knowledge of how they behave, it also reinforces our knowledge of cultural awareness,” said Gargar. “If we are training in an environment like this now, when we go on a UN mission together it makes the mission a lot easier.”

Countries have their own special abilities when it comes to handling situations or overcoming obstacles, for the soldiers of the Philippines they have the ability to adapt.

“Soldiers on peacekeeping missions for the Philippines have the ability to adapt to any situation they encounter with different cultures,” said Gargar. “Over the past 2 weeks, I have also observed they are always trying to be happy regardless of how hard the mission may be or how difficult the situation is.”
