CHERRY POINT, N.C. - Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point’s commanding officer held the stations 26th annual Commander’s Cup Golf Tournament at The Sound of Freedom Golf Course Sept. 6 and 7.

Col. Chris Pappas III, commanding officer of the air station, opened the tournament by welcoming the golfers and golf enthusiasts.

Numbered golf carts lined the winding road leading to the first hole as the 120 golfers prepared to tee-off.

“One of the things I really love about this tournament is the competition,” said Marty Desjarlais, a three-year tournament participant.

Teams of four were assigned blindly using a random computer-generated list. Participants included a mix of active duty, retired military and civilian golfers from across the country.

“I enjoy coming out to Cherry Point and playing in the tournament because it’s a chance to build camaraderie,” said Desjarlais. “Since the teams are randomly generated, everyone gets to meet a lot of new and different people each year.”

Golfers from every team teed-off from each hole during a shotgun start of the 18-hole course for a chance to win prizes. Gift certificates were awarded to the top eight teams Saturday and another eight Sunday.

“The tournament is a way for service members, civilians and their families to come out and have fun,” said Jim Ferree, course manager in his 25th year taking part in the Commanders Cup at the air station.

The first day of the tournament was played with a best net-ball format, with all four players on each team playing a hole and the team taking the lowest score for each hole. The second day was played with a team super-ball format, with each team playing from the best lie for the team after tee-off.

“What I enjoy most about the tournament is getting to see familiar faces,” said Ferree. “It’s a reunion of sorts; we get the opportunity to show folks the great course.”

Prizes were awarded throughout the tournament for contests like the closest to the pin competition, the longest drive, longest putt and straightest drive contest.

“The tournament is an opportunity for civilians to see service members as regular people, doing regular things,” said Randy Ramsey, retired Marine and 20-year participant in the tournament.

Participants look forward to next year as soon as the tournament ends, said Ramsey.

“Coming to the tournament has really become a tradition for me and my father,” said Ramsey. “I can’t wait to compete again next year.”
