    4th Marine Corps District

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Marines that attended the conference hold the military occupational specialty of 8412 or career recruiter. These Marines spend their Marine Corps career recruiting and helping develop the way the Marine Corps recruits.

The conference consisted of Marines from the Recruiting Stations and Recruiting Sub-Stations from around the district. They are all representatives of their designated recruiting station or Recruiting Sub-Station. During the conference, Marines attended classes teaching them about the direction the Marine Corps recruiting is heading, the latest resources and techniques of recruiting and other training tools.

“Every single day was great, we took advantage of the time we had together,” said Master Gunnery Sgt. James Brown, a native of McCook, Nebraska, and the 4MCD training chief. “It’s not every day we get all the recruiter instructors and career recruiters together.”

The purpose of the conference is to train the career recruiters and to learn about the different techniques.

“The conference was amazing,” said Gunnery Sgt. Rolando McLeod, the staff noncommissioned officer in charge of RSS Durham, North Carolina, and native of Southern Pines, North Carolina. “Being to many of the conferences before, one of the biggest things I learned from this conference was to be mindful of other people’s opinions. Learn how other Marines do things in their offices. To have the district commanding officer and the sergeant major come and give their vision (of recruiting) was nice.”

The conference was not all classes though. The training team put together a competition for all the RS’s 8412’s to compete in.

“We wanted to keep the competition quiet so they didn’t know what the challenges were until it was time,” said Master Sgt. Dominick Stinson, a native of Pembroke, New Hampshire, and a training team member.

There were eight competitions for the RS’s to compete in. The competitions ranged from a doughnut eating contest to a relay race.

“My favorite competition was the memory game,” said McLeod. “Watching the Marines run over and run back then having to spin around the bat 10 times and then try to run straight and see them fall all over was my favorite one of the day.”

Brown has competed in two of the 8412 games in the past two years.

“Competing in the past two conferences, I wish I could’ve competed in these,” said Brown “It was just good because I know everyone in the district is very competitive and all of them want to win, which makes it that much better. Getting to see some of them just pile in the doughnuts in that competition or seeing some of them have to run after the dizzy izzy was just fun. Don’t worry though; we have some surprises in the books for them for next year.”
