CLEVELAND – The Cleveland National Air Show hosted the United States Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron “Blue Angels” at the Burke Lakefront Airport from Aug. 30 to Sept. 1, 2014.

The purpose for Navy involvement in the airshow is to raise Navy awareness in the local community. The Navy Fleet Forces Band, "Four Star Edition" also performed at the airshow in support of the airshow as well as in front of the Cleveland Indians Stadium prior to the Labor Day game against the Detroit Tigers.

According to Kim Dell, director of marketing and promotions of the Cleveland National Air Show, the most popular attractions are the jet teams, single ship jet demonstrations and War Birds.

Dell said, “There are two things that impact the attendance at an airshow, and they are securing a jet team performance and weather.”

Dell stated preliminary attendance numbers are approximately 80,000 and average attendance for the airshow has historically been between 60,000 to 100,000 over the three day event.

Navy Recruiting District (NRD) Ohio Chief Recruiter Master Chief Navy Counselor Jeffery Kempton said, “The goal of Navy participation in air shows airshows is to create Navy awareness, it allows the local community to peek behind the curtain and see real life Navy planes in execution. Many communities are not situated near a military installation, so these airshows bring the Navy to their local community.”

According to Kempton, the airshow allows the Navy to put Navy Recruiters out in front of the multitudes as a “Walking/Talking Navy Billboard.”

Kempton said regarding recruiting efforts at the air show, “Success cannot be measured in new contract numbers alone but rather how many seeds were planted and what will our efforts yield for years to come. It is hard to put a metric in place for the positive community relations and awareness that is created”

According to Maureen Harper, chief of communication for the city of Cleveland, residents and visitors enjoy the air show and the excitement it brings to Cleveland.

Harper said, “From the city’s standpoint, the Cleveland National Air Show brings people together to celebrate aviation and provide an economic boost Cleveland’s tourism industry. The Cleveland National Air Show is a long-standing, end-of-summer tradition in Cleveland. The Navy Blue Angels provide a 'wow factor' and the Navy Band adds to the excitement of the event.”

The Navy will maintain participation in future Cleveland National Air Shows and will continue entertaining the community of Ohio while representing the valiant Sailors serving our country around the world.
