BALTIMORE – As the USS Oak Hill sailed into the Patapsco River from the Chesapeake Bay, Marines and sailors manned the rails of the ship to show the Navy-Marine Corps team Sept. 10, 2014.
More than 100 Marines from various units with II Marine Expeditionary Force, including 1st Battalion, 10th Marines, 2nd Marine Division, and 2nd Marine Logistics Group based out of Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 464, Marine Aircraft Group 29, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, based at Marine Corps Air Station New River, North Carolina, departed Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia, Sept. 9, 2014 aboard the Oak Hill to sail to Baltimore, Maryland, for fleet week.
Manning the rails gave the public a glimpse into military bearing and appearance, showcasing Marines and sailors in their dress uniforms.
“It’s almost like a military parade,” said Staff Sgt. Robert J. Coogle, an operations chief with Kilo Battery, 1st Battalion, 10th Marines, 2nd Marine Division. “It sets the tone for our appearance and provides insight into naval traditions.”
Coogle has traveled to New York City twice for fleet week. For many Marines, however, it was their first time on ship, and their first opportunity to man the rails.
“It was neat to do something you get to see in the recruiting commercials,” said Cpl. Logan Boesch, a Light Armored Vehicle Crewman with 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force. “I thought it was great to show people our professional side.”
The Marines are in Baltimore to celebrate the “Star-Spangled Spectacular” honoring the 200-year anniversary of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
During fleet week the Marines and sailors will showcase the Navy-Marine Corps team and set up static displays of different equipment the service members use on a day-to-day basis.
“We want to show the public what we do on a regular basis,” said Coogle.
Despite a consistent workflow including community relations events, static displays, and flag-raising ceremonies, the Marines are looking forward to some time off in a new place.
“We’re looking forward to finding out what Baltimore is all about,” said Coogle.
