BEL AIR, Md. – Members of the Navy Parachute Team jumped for hundreds of spectators at the Harford County Airfield Sept. 13 during the team’s visit to Baltimore for the Star-Spangled Spectacular.

The team, known as the Leap Frogs, along with service members from Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit Six (EODMU 6), demonstrated their specialized Navy skills.

“This was a really great experience for me to share with my two daughters,” said Kevin Smith. “It was great seeing the girls interact with the EOD guys. I know I learned a lot about them that I didn’t know before.”

The EOD team demonstrated the capabilities of their Small Unmanned Ground Vehicles (SUG-V) to assess and conduct surveillance of suspected explosive devices.

“We are out here to inform people about what we do,” said Explosive Ordnance Disposalman 2nd Class Jeffrey Gansmann, attached to EODMU 6. “Most people don’t actually know what we do, so this is a great opportunity for us to show the public what exactly we are capable of. The kids’ reactions to the SUG-V are just an added benefit to this job.”

The Star-Spangled Spectacular runs Sept. 10-16, 2014. This event celebrates the bicentennial of the Battle of Baltimore, which provided the backdrop for Francis Scott Key's famous poem, "Defence of Fort McHenry," which later became America's national anthem. More than 30 ships from the U.S. and foreign nations, and the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels aircraft will be on display and open to the public.
