Joint Task Force - National Capital Region

WASHINGTON - William Howard Taft, the 27th President of the United States was honored on the occasion of his birthday by Maj. Gen. Jeffrey S. Buchanan, Joint Force Headquarters-National Capital Region/U.S. Army Military District of Washington commanding general, who laid a wreath at his gravesite in Arlington National Cemetery, Va.

In addition to serving as President, Taft also was the tenth Chief Justice of the United States, the only person to have served in both of these offices. Taft also served as Secretary of War, Provisional Governor of Cuba and Governor-General of the Philippines.

During his Presidency, Taft saw both New Mexico and Arizona admitted to the Union. During his time as Chief Justice, Taft successfully argued for a separate Supreme Court building, something which was finished five years after his death.

Taft was also a college wrestling champion at Yale, where he later served as Professor of Law, until he was made Chief Justice by President Warren G. Harding.

Taft died on March 8, 1930 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery on March 11. Taft is one of two Presidents, the other being John F. Kennedy, to be buried in the historic cemetery. Taft is also one of four Chief Justices, who's final resting place is Arlington National Cemetery, the others being Earl Warren, Warren E. Burger and William Rehnquist.
