BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The 416th Army Field Support Brigade (AFSB), located in Davenport, Iowa, recently completed an annual training event in the Republic of Korea Aug. 10-30. Commanded by Col. Greg Townley and Command Sgt. Maj. G. Matthew Schmell, the 416th provided mission command for a 61 Soldier element that participated in Operation Ulchi Freedom Guardian 2014 (UFG 14). The element included members from the Army Sustainment Command-Army Reserve Element (ASC-ARE) and the Logistics Civil Augmentation Program (LOGCAP) Brigade, both from Rock Island Arsenal, Rock Island, Illinois, as well as, many other Army Reserve Soldiers from across the 377th Theater Sustainment Command (TSC). UFG 14 was a peninsula-wide, computer-based exercise with logistics operations headquartered in Daegu, Korea.
Reserve Component Soldiers came from all over the United States in support of the combined exercise between the Republic of Korea and the United States. Soldiers helped train service members assigned to the United States Forces Korea (USFK) on crisis response situations in Korea. The scenarios provided opportunities for units to accomplish their mission essential task training.
Soldiers under Townley’s command traveled to Korea to support the mission of the 403rd AFSB, as well as, other major commands involved; including USFK, 8th Army, and the 19th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary). The support covered a large geographical area on the peninsula.
Various locations that were supported were Camp Henry, Camp Walker, and Camp Carroll in the southern part of the Republic of Korea, and Camp Casey and Warrior Base, which are both located further north.
The 416th AFSB Soldiers were located at the headquarters of several units and assumed the duties and responsibilities of battle officers and NCOs, liaison officers, and support staff officers and NCOs. Their experience and expertise provided the supported units with seamless communication while issuing war stocks, tracking simulated losses, and providing command and control across the battlefield.
Townley and his staff ensured that Soldiers were afforded the opportunity to experience the local culture too. In addition to their military duties, Soldiers were able to visit the Seomun Market, the largest traditional market in Daegu, containing more than 4,000 shops. Large portions of the market are in the open air or in large buildings containing hundreds of small shops. Soldiers made the most of these trips by bringing home Korean-made keepsakes and souvenirs. Several Soldiers also took the opportunity to attend baseball games, try traditional Korean cuisine, and experience other local customs during their travel abroad.
