FRANKFORT, Ky. - Kentucky National Guard officer candidates and warrant officer candidates attended an honorary luncheon at the Governor’s Mansion, Frankfort, Ky., Sept. 26, 2014.
The annual event honors new officers and warrant officers of the KYNG, along with their guests, usually a family member or friend, with a buffet style lunch, followed by dessert.
“The Governor’s luncheon would be their first as officers, and for some this is actually their first time being in the Governor’s Mansion,” said Army Maj. Bobbie Mayes, Officer Candidate School commander, 238th Regimental Combat Arms.
Mayes mentioned that having a close role in the OCS program is something she is fond of.
“Being able to help produce the cream of the crop is something I’m very honored to do, I’m very proud of them,” she said.
“They’re like my children, because I’ve actually seen how far they’ve come. Now they’re brand new second lieutenants and warrant officers,” she said.
For WOC David B. Chandler, this was a warm welcome to a new lifestyle.
“It’s an introduction to a new way of life, and I am very gracious to the governor and his wife for opening up their home to us,” he said.
Chandler, a Radcliff, Kentucky, native and prior KYNG enlisted wheel mechanic assigned to Bravo Company, 103rd Brigade Support Battalion, was accompanied by his girlfriend, Sierra Jack, an event coordinator at Seven Springs Mountain Resort.
“It was great to get the perspective of others who are familiar with this career,” said Jack. They offered great insight on what lies ahead.”
Special guests included Air Force Maj. Gen. Edward W. Tonini, Kentucky’s Adjutant General, and his wife, Carol Tonini, along with Army Col. Haldane B. Lamberton, 238th Regional Training Institute commander, and his wife, Karen Lamberton.
Guest speakers, Mrs. Tonini and Mrs. Lamberton, offered their congratulations and spoke from experience about new responsibilities and challenges the leaders and their families will face -- placing emphasis on leading a balanced life.
“There is love of family, love of career, and love of God; all very important, and all need to be balanced,” said Lamberton.
After the luncheon, guests socialized and shared their anticipation for the upcoming graduation.
