    Military Intelligence Readiness Command

FORT BELVOIR, Va. – Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Talley, chief of Army Reserve, commanding general U.S. Army Reserve Command, awarded soldiers of the 338th Military Intelligence Battalion the Meritorious Unit Commendation (MUC) Sept. 19, 2014, for their recent combat deployment to Afghanistan. To the men and women of the battalion, it meant more than just a ribbon to place on their unit colors.

“Receiving the Meritorious Unit Commendation is an amazing feeling. It attests to the fact that a group of very special people came together to accomplish a task and they succeeded in doing so,” said Maj. Richard Kehoe of the 338th MI Battalion. “It is not only a credit to the Soldiers of our battalion, but to all of the interpreters, civilians, and other agencies that served alongside us in the Theatre Intelligence Group.”

Established in 1944, the Meritorious Unit Commendation is awarded to units who display exceptional conduct in military operations against an armed enemy of the United States. In August 2013, the 338th MI Battalion deployed to Afghanistan to do just that. During their nine-month deployment, 128 soldiers of the battalion provided intelligence essential to Counterinsurgency Operations across Afghanistan.

The soldiers of the battalion recall a history of service and tradition. Since its organization in 1948, the 338th Military Intelligence Battalion has served as a relied upon intelligence operations unit. The battalion earned a Superior Unit Award for their deployment to Iraq in 2007.

As the soldiers representing the unit stood side-by-side, they accepted the award in Arlington, Virginia and looked back on their year of service overseas.

“I feel proud that the soldiers of the 338th are forever recognized for their hard work and sacrifice while deployed to Afghanistan,” said Chief Warrant Officer Michael Knight, 338th MI BN Senior Analyst. “Having the Chief of the Army Reserve personally present the award was especially gratifying as it signifies the importance of the distinction.”

Today, soldiers of the battalion enjoy stateside downtime, but continue to hone their skills and train as a team.

“This was an outstanding day for the battalion,” said Maj. Bill Putnam, who served as the 338th MI BN executive officer during this deployment. “Receiving this award demonstrates the significance of what the battalion and its soldiers accomplished as a collective group. It’s not about individuality; it's about a team working together to accomplish the mission and take care of each other.”
