SPRINGFIELD, Va. - Robert Cardillo took over as director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency Oct. 3 in a ceremony at the agency’s Springfield, Virginia, headquarters.
Cardillo, the former deputy director for intelligence integration at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, took the helm from Letitia A. Long, who will retire after 36 years of federal service.
Surrounded by family, friends and colleagues, Cardillo said he is humbled and honored to lead NGA.
“I can’t be more excited about the opportunity we all have to build on a legacy of helping our customers succeed and take NGA to new heights of service to the nation,” said Cardillo.
Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence Michael G. Vickers, Ph.D., presided over the ceremony and said Cardillo has an unparalleled depth of experience and expertise in the intelligence community and with geospatial intelligence — or GEOINT.
“Secretary Hagel, Director Clapper and I have the highest confidence that Robert is exactly the right person to lead NGA into the future,” said Vickers referring to Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel and Director of National Intelligence James Clapper.
Cardillo successfully encouraged the intelligence community to embrace and execute intelligence integration — a top priority for Vickers and Clapper.
Another of Cardillo’s previous responsibilities was the President’s Daily Brief — a role President Obama mentioned in a recorded address played during the ceremony.
“I’ve gotten to know Robert really well; he’s often delivered my daily briefings,” said Obama. “He’s smart. He’s unflappable. He’s earned my complete confidence as he prepares to lead this agency forward.”
The president also thanked Long for her service.
“We’ve been lucky to have someone as extraordinary as Director Long at the helm,” said Obama.
Serving as the director of NGA was the greatest honor in her professional career, said Long.
“My words today fail to fully express what great joy and appreciation I am feeling for all of you,” said Long. “I am eternally grateful of the opportunity to serve and serve with the best people on earth.”
