CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. - The Marine Corps prides itself on a seemingly innumerable list of traits. Whether it’s the striking and well-kempt uniforms, a strong sense of discipline and military bearing, or a strict adherence to customs and traditions, Marines remain one of the most reputable and identifiable fighting forces in the world.
Protecting and refining the strong roots of an organization requires highly trained, competent and motivated leaders. Corporals Course, a professional military education course for new non-commissioned officers, ensures that Marines are mentally and physically prepared to successfully lead subordinates.
“Corporals Course aims to teach and reinforce the basics,” said Sgt. Casey Leva, the non-commissioned officer in charge of the 1st Intelligence Battalion Corporals Course. “Things taught at Corporals Course are the things held in common by all Marines. A lot of Marines haven’t had the chance to fire weapons or train in the field for a considerable amount of time. We wanted to give them the chance to do that again.”
1st Intelligence Battalion offers a newly redesigned course spanning three weeks with a curriculum ranging from live-fire ranges to land navigation. Training doesn’t cease when the Marines aren’t in the field; students can expect ample classroom time studying military topics in addition to regular and detailed uniform and gear inspections. The course also featured various guest speakers including Medal of Honor recipient Dakota Meyer and Sgt. Maj. Ronald Green. The course’s culminating event also set this iteration of Corporals Course apart from the rest featuring a nine-mile hike, live-fire ranges, and gas chamber training.
“The course completely surprised me and was nothing like I expected,” said Cpl. Brian Willes, a field radio operator and recent Corporals Course graduate. “I expected the course to be solely academic but it was so much more than that. Every day I was challenged and taken out of my comfort zone. It was a dramatic change from my day to day duties in my unit. It was really refreshing to be reintroduced to the things that I joined the Marine Corps to do.”
Corporals Course allows Marines to view basic military concepts from new angles and implement them with renewed confidence. Benefits of the instruction encompass more than individual Marines. Unit commanders with returning graduates can be confident they will welcome qualified leaders home from the course.
