CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Marines and sailors with Headquarters Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division participated in the unit’s annual Turkey Bowl aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Oct. 22.
The Turkey Bowl is the unit’s annual football tournament in which companies play against one another using a bracket system, which ultimately decides the winner of the Turkey Bowl trophy.
Cpl. Brian Newport, a training non-commissioned officer with Headquarters Company, said the purpose of the event is to see who the best section in the regiment is, as well as to build unit cohesion and morale.
“This is something we do in the fall season that helps build camaraderie and gets the shops out here to play with one another, have a little bit of fun, and break up the monotony of work,” said Capt. Shawn Carian, training officer-in-charge with Headquarters Co.
Carian said that the idea for the Turkey Bowl was thought of when the noncommissioned officers within the regiment got together and chose to compete in football.
“You’ve got members from each rank out here and they are playing together and for their shops so they aren’t here as individuals,” said Carian. “We’re out here playing as a unit, and you can build that morale but also see each individual’s leadership qualities while connecting as a shop.”
This year’s Turkey Bowl trophy was awarded to Motor Transportation Company, marking the third year in a row that Motor Transport has won the tournament.
