CAMP GUERNSEY, Wyo. - Fifty-seven members from five states descended on Camp Guernsey Joint Training Center for the Civil Air Patrol’s Wyoming Wing annual encampment Aug. 2-10.
The mixture of 12-to-17-year-old youth, cadet leaders and adult leaders took full advantage of the JTC’s varied training opportunities and facilities, including the obstacle and ropes courses, marksmanship simulators, trainers and the classrooms.
According to Lt. Col. B.J. Carlson, encampment commander, from Burlington, Wyoming, the cadet staff, 18-to-21-year-olds, was responsible for most of the military-like training with the younger members. Disciplines, such as drill and ceremony and military custom and courtesy, are all part of membership.
Aerospace lessons filled much of the encampment curriculum this year, Carlson added, however, there was action-oriented training and development of new leaders within the U.S. Air Force-affiliated organization.
Those activities included UH-60 Black Hawk flights with Wyoming Army National Guard crews, as well as hands-on activities and training from the Camp Guernsey Fire Department and air traffic control personnel.
Carlson went on to talk about the organization’s size and mission and how this training at the JTC helps the community.
“We have the largest private fleet of aircraft in the world,” she said. “We help out the military department more and more. We’re doing a lot of aerial recon - taking pictures, of say, the Greybull flooding.”
