FORT HOOD, Texas— Crowds of Soldiers and their family members gathered outside of Fort Hood’s Palmer Theater Oct. 18 for an advance screening of the movie “Interstellar.”

Those in attendance were also greeted by the presence of one of the film’s star actors, Matthew McConaughey, who made a special appearance.

In his first time visiting Fort Hood, McConaughey signed posters and took photos with Soldiers and their families outside of the theater.

Inside the packed theater, anticipation was high, and the moment McConaughey walked in, his adoring fans shouted from all over the crammed theater “Matthew!”

Col. Matthew Elledge, the Fort Hood garrison commander, introduced McConaughey on the stage and even joked about the crowd not cheering for him despite his first name being Matthew, as well.

McConaughey came on the stage to a standing ovation. He told the crowd how honored he was to be there and discussed the theme of the movie. But, he didn’t reveal any spoilers.

“It’s a film that everyone can enjoy,” McConaughey said.

His special appearance at the theater was his way of thanking Soldiers for all that they do and sacrifice.

“Y’all are doing something extraordinary,” McConaughey said. “Without (the military), I couldn’t do what I do.”

The Academy Award-winning actor was amazed to see the support from the Soldiers at Fort Hood.

“To see so many Soldiers, so genuinely happy that we’re here and give up their Saturday ... it is our pleasure,” said McConaughey, who was accompanied by his wife, Camila Alves, and their oldest son, 6-year-old Levi.

In the movie, McConaughey plays Cooper, a former pilot and engineer whose mission is to save the world from cataclysmic resource shortages while humanity is at the brink of extinction. With the aid of other explorers, Cooper uses a newly discovered wormhole to undertake an interstellar expedition that will lead them to a new planet – a planet that can sustain Earth’s life forms. Cooper is faced with many hardships and obstacles throughout the movie.

Tina Merker, a military spouse, was one of the first people in line for the prescreening of the movie, arriving at 9 a.m., four hours before the screening began.

“Events like this are great for morale and help people with large families save money because it’s free,” Merker, who was accompanied by her husband and three children, said.

“We try to go to as many events as we can; we are just excited to be here,” she added.

“I’m excited I got an opportunity like this,” beamed Staff Sgt. Katharine Tiffany, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, III Corps. “I can’t believe I have pictures with him; he was just so cool about taking selfies with us and signing posters.”

Tiffany was one of the Soldiers preselected to greet McConaughey upon arrival at the theater.

“The movie and the appearance of Matthew McConaughey were both epic; I will never forget this event,” Tiffany said. “This was a great event for the morale of Soldiers, and I’m glad I had the opportunity to be apart of it.”

“Interstellar” officially premieres in theaters Nov. 7.
