LAGHMAN PROVINCE, Afghanistan – The recently formed Train, Advise, Assist Command – East assumed its new mission in eastern Afghanistan Nov. 4, 2014.
U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Christopher Bentley, the TAAC-E commander, will lead an organization comprised of approximately 60 division staff officers, noncommissioned officers and Soldiers from the 3rd Infantry Division based out of Fort Stewart, Georgia, and approximately 1,000 Soldiers from the 3rd Cavalry Regiment from Fort Hood, Texas.
TAAC-E’s mission is to train, advise, and assist Afghan National Security Forces in eastern Afghanistan. The purpose is to progress the systems and processes that will make ANSF sustainable in the long run.
As combat operations under Operation Enduring Freedom come to an end Dec. 31, 2014, TAAC-E will support the transition to NATO’s Resolute Support mission and focus on improving specific functions within ANSF such as budgeting, recruiting, training, logistics, transparency, accountability and strategic communications.
TAAC-E is no longer advising at the tactical level; the organization will work to strengthen ties between the operational and strategic levels, connecting corps-level Afghan units to the Ministry of Defense and Ministry of the Interior.
The TAAC-E mission under Resolute Support is the next step in the continued partnership between ANSF and coalition forces. The 3ID Soldiers comprise the headquarters of TAAC-E and are scheduled for a 12-month deployment. The 3d CR Soldiers make up the advisory platform. They have performed the train, advise, and assist mission in Afghanistan for six months and are scheduled to conduct a transfer of authority with another brigade early in 2015.
