JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. - Last month, the 1st Battalion, 94th Field Artillery Regiment returned home from a nine-month deployment in support of a U.S. Central Command mission.
To commemorate the unit’s redeployment, the battalion held an uncasing ceremony at the 1-94 FAR headquarters here Oct. 24.
“It is said that the soul of a unit is symbolized in the colors under which it fights and in the battle streamers affixed to those colors, as they record the accomplishments of the past, stand guardian over the present and provide inspiration for the unit’s future,” said Col. Tim F. Kehoe, the commander of the 17th Field Artillery Brigade.
The 1-94 FAR’s mission was to support the CENTCOM commander in a multifaceted mission, which included promoting cooperation among nations, responding to crises, and supporting reconstruction in order to establish conditions for regional security, stability, and prosperity.
As the troops stood in formation, they received words of encouragement and praise from their leadership.
“I want to congratulate the soldiers on a great rotation and on the missions they did downrange,” said Lt. Col. Alan Wagner, 1-94th FAR commander. “We didn’t see combat, but we prepared and were ready to roll at any moment.”
The battalion worked with national and international comrades during their multifaceted mission.
“It felt great to spend time with our partners and help them get better,” said Wagner. “I feel that we made ourselves better as well.”
According to Wagner the unit meshed together, in a combined effort, to ensure mission success.
“The teamwork that was built downrange is commendable,” said Wagner. “The sections, platoons, batteries and the battalion as a whole became closer than any other unit I’ve been with in the past.”
At the conclusion of the ceremony, the command was given for the battalion to uncase its colors. The batteries lowered their guidons and saluted, while a soldier lowered the battalion colors, in order to uncase the colors, which symbolizes the battalion has officially returned home.
Wagner placed an emphasis on family and the rekindling of relationships that had been distanced for nine months.
“It feels good to be home again with our families and loved ones,” said Wagner.
