MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Children with the Young Marines program from Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station New River spent the day with 2nd Tank Battalion, 2nd Marine Division during gunnery training to get a glimpse into what some Marines do and see tanks in action aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Oct 25.
The Young Marines is a program for youth from the ages 8 to 18 focusing on the mental, moral and physical development with the goals of building character, leadership and promoting a healthy lifestyle.
The Young Marines are sponsored by 2nd Tank Battalion and support them by providing classroom and training events.
“This is a unique opportunity for the kids,” said Sgt. Joseph Vianna, a volunteer with the Young Marines. “The young Marines program is mainly in the classroom, and seeing the tanks is another outlet for the kids to learn and see Marines doing their daily jobs.”
The Marines taught the children about their equipment through displays of the M1A1 Abrams tank, M88 recovery vehicle, 7-ton Truck Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement, a tank simulator and Mission Oriented Protective Posture gear demonstration.
“We conducted section gunnery and crew gunnery,” said Sgt. Amadeo Hernandez, platoon sergeant with Bravo Company, 2nd Tank Battalion, 1st Platoon and Floresville, Texas Native. “The Young Marines got to see tanks first hand, something not many kids can say. The program keeps the youth engaged, teaches them leadership and keeps them out of trouble.”
In addition to learning about equipment, the Young Marines observed the tanks shooting, moving and communicating.
“It’s a great experience to see the kids being productive with their time,” said Vianna, a Webster, New York native. “The program allows them to grow and mature in a structured environment and have fun at the same time.”
