CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait – Mississippi Soldiers enjoyed a southern holiday treat of Gulfport shrimp and gumbo, Dec. 17, shipped by air cargo from the people of the state of Mississippi.

The 50 gallons of gumbo and 500 pounds of cooked, peeled shrimp were sent to Soldiers of the Aviation Classification Repair Activity Depot, by Mississippi Congressman Gene Taylor and his constituents, to National Guard Soldiers of the 1108th Aviation Classification Repair Activity Depot from Gulfport, who recently began a one-year deployment.

"It was personally asked of us by Congressman Taylor to do this for the troops", said Capt. Raleigh Murphy, Headquarters Company Commander, Task Force AVCRAD.

More than 250 Soldiers and civilians enjoyed the noon meal at Patton Air Field.

"Everyone will get full", said Master Sgt. Marty Goodman, Logistics non-commissioned officer, Task Force AVCRAD. "I have been with the unit ten years now. We do Thanksgiving dinner, Christmas dinner and I try to head that up every year."

"We all want to thank Congressman Taylor and the people of the State of Mississippi and the Congressional Delegation . . . who brought this meal over here for us," said Col. James Young of Gulfport, who commands Task Force AVCRAD.

"It's a little taste of home, a little taste of the Gulf Coast, and southern hospitality for all of us to enjoy . . . a way that the folks back home have of saying thank you. We appreciate what the people back home do for us and our families, especially during the holidays," Young said.

Task Force AVCRAD provides limited depot level maintenance support to all rotary aircraft units in Southwest Asia. The task force is also supported by Company B of the 935th Battalion out of Chicago, and Guard members from Missouri and California.

The Soldiers provide supply parts and intermediate maintenance support by rebuilding rotary aircraft engines, rotary blade repair and avionics equipment support. Task Force AVCRAD also receives and ships aircraft back to the U.S. through air and seaports in Kuwait as aviation units deploy and redeploy under the Third/U.S. Army Central area of responsibility.

AVCRAD is part of the Aviation and Missile Life Cycle Management Command of the Army Materiel Command, providing support to all Soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan.
