Life jackets help 4 men survive capsizing: Coast Guard, good Samaritan respond
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Two boaters were rescued by Coast Guard crews and two others swam to a nearby island after a boat with four people aboard capsized Saturday off Morris Island near the entrance to Charleston Harbor.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Charleston received the initial report from a good Samaritan at approximately 3:18 p.m. of a 25-foot boat capsizing due to surf. The original report stated that, of the four people aboard, two swam safely to Morris Island, but the other two were still in the water. All four people were wearing life jackets.
A smallboat crew from the Coast Guard Cutter Yellowfin and a response boat crew from Station Charleston were launched to assist.
The smallboat crew from the Yellowfin arrived on scene first, rescued two men from the water and transferred them to the Station Charleston response boat. The other two men, who swam to Morris Island following the capsizing, were picked up by a good Samaritan. All four men were transported to Tolliver City Marina where local EMS was standing by.
One of the men rescued by the Coast Guard reported being stung by a stingray and was attended to by EMS.
"We are always pleased with this type of outcome," said Lt. Kristi Nadler, command duty officer for the Sector Charleston command center. "Life jackets were relevant to the survival of these gentlemen."
