KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – The Soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines of various nations who serve at Kandahar Airfield gathered near dusk to honor and celebrate the service of U.S. service members.
The ceremony, attended by both U.S. service members and members of the coalition, included a reading that explained the brief history of Veterans Day, noting that this holiday started as Armistice Day, an observation meant to honor the end of World War I.
Following the reading of a brief history of the holiday, Brig. Gen. Douglas Gabram, the commander of Train, Advise, and Assist Command – South, spoke to the crowd who were assembled in a horseshoe around him.
During his remarks, Gabram thanked everyone for their service to their nation and said that the longer you serve and the older you get, the more you appreciate those you served with and the sacrifices and reminded everyone that “the Army is the strength of the nation, Soldiers are the strength of the Army, and Families are the strength of the Soldier,”
As Gabram reminded everyone to remember those who have served and sacrificed he challenged the audience to “call your families and thank them, because they are serving too.”
