KABUL, Afghanistan - “On behalf of ISAF, I congratulate Ambassador Aramaz on his appointment as the next NATO Senior Civilian Representative in Afghanistan. Ambassador Aramaz’ distinguished service as Turkey’s ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and previous experience as Political Advisor to the ISAF commander from 2002 to 2003 make him supremely qualified for this position. He knows the country, the region, the Afghan people and the Afghan government. We are looking forward to working with him during this critical period.

I also extend my profound appreciation to Ambassador Jochems for the vital role he has played in supporting NATO’s efforts in Afghanistan since 2012. He has worked tirelessly with ISAF, NATO, the Afghan authorities, and senior officials from other international organizations to ensure the Alliance and our partners remain committed to supporting Afghanistan. His efforts have greatly contributed to the progress that has led us to this point in Afghanistan’s history.”

As ISAF prepares for the end of its combat mission and the full transfer of security responsibility to the Afghan National Security Forces, preparations for the implementation of the NATO-led Resolute Support Mission on 1 January continue, as agreed with the Afghan government.
