WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio – Eight military power lifters from around the area descended on Wright Field Fitness Center at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, for a powerlifting competition, Nov. 15.

The powerlifting event was the first one held in the last two years.

“There have been a lot of requests for this type of event recently,” said Rick Stanton, 88th Force Support Squadron personal trainer and event organizer. “So we decided to put on this event for the lifters to have a little bit of fun and let them show us what they got.”

Each powerlifting meeting features three separate events. The first event involves power squats, the second event is the bench press and the final event is the dead lift. The lifter gets three attempts in each event, with only the best lift counted.

“We take their best lifts from all three events and add them together to give us a cumulative total,” said Stanton. “We then use the Wilks formula, which divides their cumulative total by their body weight to give us a point total.”

U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Matthew Drolz, 88th Security Forces Squadron patrolman, was the overall winner with a cumulative weight of 1,405 pounds and a total score of 806.751.

“I started lifting just over a year ago, and when I saw this competition I knew I wanted to enter,” said Drolz. “Coming into this I knew there was a lot of strong people on the base, and it was going to be a good competition.”

Powerlifting events frequently feature competitors who do not know each other, and this event was no different.

“These guys came in not knowing anyone else competing,” said Drolz. “Not only were we able to lift some weight but everyone was supportive of each other and encouraged each other through the lifts.”

    Stanton agreed with Drolz.

“The way the guys came together and pushed each other was great to see the sportsmanship at their finest,” Stanton said. “We have two powerlifting events scheduled in 2015 and hope to see the same sportsmanship and an even bigger turnout for those.”

While the information for the powerlifting events in 2015 won’t be released in January 2015, Drolz encouraged potential participants to start lifting right away.

“The key to getting started in powerlifting is like any other exercise; getting up and going to the gym,” said Drolz. “Once you get up and go, keep a routine and the results will come.”
