GRAFENWOEHR, Germany – Taking a break from training new recruits, Soldiers from the Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Battalion met with Soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division during their visit to Grafenwoehr, Germany, Nov. 18.
The purpose of the visit was to observe the differences in the operations of maintenance and vehicle recovery operations between American and British forces.
Back in the United Kingdom, the instructors train upwards of 1,000 trainees in the maintenance and recovery of all vehicles in their military.
“The British Soldiers have the opportunity to see firsthand how our Soldiers maintain our vehicles,” said Chief Warrant Officer 3 Kenya Pinkney, a maintenance technician with the 18th Combat Support and Sustainment Battalion. “It gives them a chance to see what they can do to better their own Soldiers.”
The Royal Forces Soldiers arrived at the tank range as Soldiers from 2nd Bn., 12th Cav. Regt. were conducting live-fire training exercises with their M1A2 Abrams tanks, allowing them an opportunity to witness the crews in action.
The instructors, equivalent to the U.S. Army's drill sergeants, took a tour of 2nd Bn., 12th Cav. Regt. M1A2 Abrams tanks, discussing the processes involved in maintaining them and how recovery operations work should a tank become stuck or broken.
“We are eager to see how the Americans recover their vehicles in a field environment,” said Sgt. Doug Watson, an instructor at REMEB. “Seeing it done first hand allows us to see the differences between us more clearly.”
The Soldiers in 2nd Bn., 12th CAV have been conducting multinational training with their NATO allies as part of Combined Resolve III since October.
