CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea – The Company A, 6th Battalion, 52nd Aviation Regiment, 3rd General Support Aviation Battalion, 2nd Combat Aviation, 2nd Infantry Division from Kunsan Air Base received the Army Aviation Association of America Fixed-Wing Unit of the Year Award at the 2014 AAAA Annual Professional Forum Nov. 6 in Huntsville, Ala.
The 2nd CAB mission on the Korean Peninsula is to conduct theater aviation operations in support of the 8th U.S. Army. The unit is currently the only forward deployed aviation brigade in the Republic of Korea. During combat operations the brigade provides aviation support to the Ground Component Command as an element of the Combined Aviation Force.
In particular, the Company A, 6-52nd Aviation Regiment mission is to conduct theater-wide air movement of personnel and cargo in support of the Pacific Command and the Special Operations Command Pacific.
Co. A, 6-52nd Aviation Regiment consists of 27 personnel who operate and maintain four C-12U Super King Airs and one C-12J Beech 1900. From Aug. 1 2013 to July 31 2014, Company A flew 4,320 hours to include 2,043 combat hours throughout 12 different countries. During this period, they transported a total of 3,487 passengers and moved over 295,486 pounds of cargo. The company was estimated to have saved the Air Force $165,000 in commercial airfare. During the immense amount of flight hours, the unit had zero flight-related Class A, B or C incidents.
The 3rd GSAB commander, Lt. Col. Kenneth Cole, said he believes that Company A’s customer driven support and flexibility distinguishes it from other fixed-wing units.
“What they do on a daily basis providing senior leaders mobility and operational support is unmatched,” Cole said.
Company A, 6-52nd Aviation Regiment just makes up a part of the 2nd CAB. Also known as the talon brigade, 2nd CAB is made up of an assault helicopter battalion, a general support aviation battalion, an attack helicopter battalion and an aviation support battalion. The brigade has close to 2,500 Soldiers.
The 602nd Aviation Support Battalion provides aviation and ground field maintenance, replenishment of all classes of supplies and medical support for 2nd CAB. The 4th Aerial Reconnaissance Battalion (Attack), 2nd Aviation Regiment conducts deterrence against North Korea while strengthening the Republic of Korea and U.S. alliance. During combat operations, the 2nd Battalion (Assault), 2nd Aviation Regiment transitions to war and conducts air assault and general support aviation operations in support of the 2nd Infantry Division The 3rd GSAB conducts theater-wide airborne medical evacuations and general support aviation operations in support of 2nd Infantry Division and 8th Army.
The four battalions have collectively received numerous awards and honors leading up to Company A, 6-52nd Aviation Regiment receiving the AAAA Fixed-Wing Unit of the Year Award to include: the Army Award for Maintenance Excellence, Presidential Unit Citations, Valorous Unit Awards, Meritorious Unit Commendations and Army Superior Unit Awards.
The 2nd CAB commander, Col. Hank Taylor, said that in the brigade every single Soldiers motivation and dedication is what brings true success to 2nd CAB and the honor of this award.
