FORT CARSON, Colo. - Army explosive ordnance disposal troops hosted U.S. Air Force Academy cadets for a joint training exercise here Nov. 20.
Cadets from the Air Force Academy's Chemistry of Weapons Course trained with Army EOD Soldiers from the 764th EOD Company on Fort Carson's Range 121.
The 764th EOD Company is part of the 242nd EOD Battalion, 71st EOD Group, 20th CBRNE Command (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, Explosives). The 20th CBRNE Command trains and operates with joint, interagency and allied partners around the world.
According to U.S. Air Force Maj. Thomas Heier, an Air Force Academy chemistry instructor, the visit enabled the cadets to take their training out of the classroom and into the field.
In the classroom, Heier said the chemistry students could only "draw explosive molecules and calculate their effects."
Col. Heidi Hoyle, commander of the Fort Carson-based 71st EOD Group, said the cadets worked with live explosives under the supervision of seasoned Army EOD technicians.
"By training with the 764th EOD, the students were able to gain real-world, hands-on experience to supplement their theoretical knowledge and classroom study," said Hoyle.
Sponsored by the 242nd EOD Battalion and Air Force Academy Engineering Department, the training is a recurring event.
