CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Those who look forward to creating nightmares this Halloween can take up residence in the streets of Terror Town, where monsters, ghouls and demons create a world of fright for visitors from Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune throughout the Halloween season.
Volunteers can sign up for the upcoming Terror Town call for volunteers Sept. 22, 29 and Oct. 6, at 6 p.m. at the Base Theater.
Terror Town is an annual event aboard Camp Lejeune where visitors follow a path that leads through the haunted and topsy-turvy world of Halloween. From sadistic dentists to gory butcher shops, volunteers create room after room of blood curdling horrors.
All members of the military community over the age of 18 with a valid identification card are welcome to sign up for the four-day event.
Volunteers can serve as performers, makeup artists, as well as participate in the construction and destruction of sets and assist with crowd control and security at Terror Town.
"We’re looking for all different types of volunteers," said Charlie Miller, the theater manager for Camp Lejeune.
Brandy Thompson Smith, the volunteer coordinator with Terror Town, wants energetic, passionate and creative folks to make their way to the volunteer call.
"We let performers bring their own taste into it," said Miller, a native of Cameron, West Virginia. "Performers can decorate and bring their own personal touch to their areas."
In the past, a contortionist crawled to patrons from an asylum themed room and a swamp room held a ghillie-suited monster ready to shock the tourists of Terror Town.
"These volunteers have a lot of fun," said Smith. "They are more than muscle. They are being creative and making new friends."
Volunteers can pitch ideas at the sign-up sessions and begin to work together to create a chilling experience for those who dare make their way through the haunted attractions.
"There are a lot of opportunities to be creative," said Smith. "There are not a lot of events that allow you to come up with a concept and develop it from start to finish. It’s a lot of fun and very exciting."
All volunteer hours are tracked. Participants can determine their own level of involvement and while it is preferred they take part in every night of Terror Town, it is not required.
Terror Town is scheduled for the evenings of Oct. 24, 25, 30 and 31.
