WASHINGTON - Bravery, dedication and unwavering commitment to duty were among a list of distinguished attributes of the Soldiers, Airmen and civilians recognized at the District of Columbia National Guard’s (DCNG) 67th Annual Awards and Decorations Ceremony held at the Armory in Washington, D.C., Dec. 7.
Twenty-five men and women were recognized during the ceremony for several achievements. The categories included Noncommissioned Officer of the Year, Senior Noncommissioned Officer of the Year, Airman of the Year, outstanding leadership, volunteerism and Family of the Year.
DCNG Commanding General Maj. Gen. Errol Schwartz applauded the accomplishments of the honorees.
“Congratulations to all of the awardees. This is a team effort of the entire District of Columbia National Guard. I know that you work very hard, all of you, long hours to make this command a premier, elite command in the nation’s capital,” he said. “It is because of you and the work you’ve done, that we are looking so good.”
Honoree Army Sgt. Timothy Brown, a military policeman with the 275th Military Police Battalion, received the District of Columbia Hero Recognition Award for stopping an attack on a police officer at a local hospital where he works.
“A person in the hospital became violent and started to attack the deputy. I stepped in and assisted the deputy in subduing the attacker,” Brown said.
Brown said he was humbled to be recognized for doing his job.
“I am honored to be here and to be a part of the DCNG and the U.S. Army. I tell people that even though I don’t wear this uniform 24 hours a day, I am still a Soldier,” Brown said.
Air Force Capt. Duane Peterson, a maintenance officer with the 113th Maintenance Squadron said, “Awards and decorations are an important part of our military heritage and it is extremely important for our military commanders to take a moment to recognize what our Soldiers and Airmen do for our units every single day. I think it’s clear that the command has made this a priority.”
The ceremony is a tradition with the DCNG, however this year’s event included a pass and review segment, according to event coordinator Army Maj. Tekeshia Allen.
“Today we are going to join an awards and decoration ceremony along with the pass and review. It has not been done this way in about 15 to 20 years,” said Allen.
The inclusion of the pass and review part of the ceremony gives the participants a sense of pride, according to Allen.
“I believe it makes the Soldiers and Airmen feel honored. They actually have the opportunity to do what we do and that is to participate in drill and ceremony,” Allen said.
