    JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The United States Marine Corps supported the 2014 USRowing annual convention Dec. 4-7, in Jacksonville, Fla. to explore recruiting opportunities and promote Marine Corps leadership.

    The United States Rowing Association (USRowing) was established in 1982 and is recognized as the national governing body for the sport of rowing in the United States. The association selects, trains, and manages the teams that represent the U.S. in international competition including the world championships and Olympics. USRowing serves and promotes the sport on all levels of competition including juniors, collegians, masters and those who row for recreation, competition or fitness.

    The Marine Corps was a presenting partner in this year’s USRowing annual convention. Every year, members within the rowing community network and explore rowing programs, coaching certifications, and attend the annual awards reception. The 2014 USRowing John J. Carlin Award was presented to Ted Kakas by Colonel William J. Bowers, Commanding Officer of the 6th Marine Corps District.

    “This award is all about honor, courage, and commitment, those core values that we hold most dear and live by as United States Marines,” said Bowers. “We are here to recognize and serve those exceptional young men and women of character … they’re all truly exceptional.”

    Throughout the convention, Marine officer selection officers and recruiters were on hand to educate and promote Marine Corps leadership techniques and career opportunities. The Marines also raised awareness to coaches and influencers of Marine Corps leadership workshops designed to equip athletes with the leadership skills needed to win.

    The partnership proved to be successful, drawing attraction from rowers, coaches, and key influencers around the nation.

    “We are proud to be partnered with USRowing for this event,” said Capt. Sean Ramirez, Gainesville officer selection officer. “We are looking to form future partnerships with rowing programs and USRowing and set up leadership development with their athletes.”
