CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. - Marines with 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, alongside elements of the 7th Singapore Infantry Brigade conducted live-fire, combined arms training as part of Exercise Valiant Mark 14.2 aboard Camp Pendleton, Calif., Dec. 6, 2014.

Exercise Valiant Mark is a continuous bilateral training exercise between the United States Marine Corps and the Singaporean Armed Forces which is scheduled to take place aboard Camp Pendleton through Dec. 19.

Exercise Valiant Mark enhances the United States and Singapore forces’ combined combat readiness through live fire and urban terrain training as well as amphibious operations familiarization. The first iteration of this exercise, Valiant Mark 14.1, was held in January 2014 in Singapore.

Marines and Singaporean Soldiers established security while hiking toward the live fire range. The Marines and Soldiers discussed tactical maneuvers and strategies while receiving feedback as they progressed toward their enemy targets down range.

“Today’s specific event is a squad-level live fire, which will consist of a six-man section of Singaporean Armed Forces conducting a section assault on a maneuver box supported by U.S. Marines’ 60 millimeter mortars and Singaporean Armed Forces’ medium machine guns,” said Capt. Richard Lippincott, Bravo Company commander, 1/5.

Each Singaporean six-man team conducted live-fire maneuvers down range to simulate a combat scenario of how to react and proceed while taking fire from the enemy.

“The purpose of Valiant Mark is to see how the two different militaries work together and to see how we compare and learn if we can pick up different tactics and procedures from one another,” said 1st Lt. Michael Freismuth, 1st platoon commander of Company B, 1/5.

The Marines and Singaporean Armed Forces communicated as they progressed through the live-fire exercise and informed one another of the decisions they would make to accomplish the mission. The Marines offered input into the scenario and shared their knowledge with the Singaporean Soldiers to help them improve their tactics.

“Today’s live-fire exercise is for Marines and Singaporean Armed Forces to share ideas about how we do things, tactically running range assault through an objective and also to refine our skills and offer feedback and advice from one force to the other and vice versa,” said Lippincott.

The Marines and Singaporean Armed Forces continue to establish and build a relationship to strengthen both militaries and improve the overall mission readiness of the United States and its allies.

“The key takeaway is going to be operating with one another, building camaraderie and building a friendship so that during future events, whatever they may be, we can exist and work as one team,” said Lippincott.

Marines and allies of the United States continue to train and remain ready to support the mission and respond to any crisis at a moment’s notice.
