U.S. CENTRAL COMMAND, Undisclosed Location - Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force - Crisis Response - Central Command is an organization filled with exceptional men and women supporting the Marine Corps’ newest crisis response force as it remains forward-deployed in the Middle East. The Marines and sailors who comprise its ranks represent the qualities, characteristics, core values and traditions that make them the few and the proud.
Amongst the ranks of the command, a select group of Warriors exceed expectations and serve as an example to their peers and model to the individuals they lead.
In this interview we recognize one of those Marines. Staff Sgt. Roy J. Lackey, the Civil Affairs chief with SPMAGTF-CR-CC, was chosen by his leadership for his outstanding commitment, embodiment of the Corps’ core values, and devotion to serving as an example to his fellow Marines.
Q: What motivates you to succeed at your job and in the Marine Corps?
A: The biggest thing that motivates me is the Marines. And me doing my job as a Staff NCO taking care of the Marines and ensuring that their able to do their job and successfully complete the mission.
Q: Why is your job important to the success of SPMAGTF-CR-CC?
A: I have a few different jobs within the Special-Purpose MAGTF but, as a Staff NCO, it’s preparing the junior Marines to have those capabilities to succeed and ultimately accomplish the mission. As a Civil Military Operations guy, there hasn’t been a big need for us but, in the CMO side, we’ve found a way to play into the [Theater Security Cooperation] world. And as the training chief, I’m ensuring that we’re completing the [Pre-deployment Training Plan] and annual training requirements.
Q: How does your family feel about you being in the Marine Corps?
A: At first they were a little skeptical, plus I am the first person in my family to join the military. And now after 12, they’re proud of me, but reaching the point for me to move on to other things.
Q: Why did you join the Marine Corps?
A: I met a guy at my high school that was a student teacher. I got to know him pretty good and he came out to the soccer field and ran us a few times. I got to know him and his wife, I helped them move, and once the recruiter called me I kind of put two and two together and went in and had a meeting with him.
Q: Why is it important to serve your country?
A: I joined the Marine Corps right after 9/11. At first, it was important to join and be one of the members in the force and protect innocent civilians from attacks like that again.
Q: What do value most about the Marine Corps and why?
A: The thing I value the most about the Marine Corps is that you get out of it what you put into it. The biggest thing is that I get to work with Marines from different upbringings.
Q: What advice do you have for other Marines who wish to succeed in the Corps?
A: If I had to give any advice it’s to give 100 percent and give the initiative. Don’t wait for someone to give it to you.
