CAMP SCHWAB, Japan - U.S. Marines and service members of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force navigate through Camp Schwab Dec. 4 to observe and learn about the capabilities of assault amphibious vehicles.

Service members with the Western Army Infantry Regiment, JGSDF, visited the Marines of Combat Assault Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, to see firsthand how the Marines employ these unique fighting vehicles which are designed to drive on land and sea.

The visit included a walkthrough of a maintenance ramp, where Marines conduct preventative maintenance on the AAVs, while educating leaders of the JGSDF on the AAV’s capabilities, such as its’ operational speed on land and in water.

“The main purpose for their visit was for them to come down here to observe how we operate as a unit,” said Jackson. “They are still developing their force, and we wanted to show them how we handle our responsibilities in CAB, while showcasing the AAVs.”

The JGSDF’s visit educated them on what the AAV is used for because they are considering developing amphibious capabilities, according Jackson, a Detroit, Michigan, native.

The educated leaders of the JGSDF take the information learned about the AAVs from the Marines and pass it to members within their unit, in order to further develop the way they operate, according to Col. Yoshiyuki Goto, commander of Western Army Infantry Regiment, JGSDF.

“The Marines have 239 years of history, and (because we are a new military) we are learning from their experiences,” said Goto, an Oita-Prefecture, Japan, native.

They learned how the Marines employ the AAV by using the range and armaments of the vehicle to deliver Marines from ship to shore.

“The Marines are brothers to us, we learned a lot of information from them,” said Goto. “I am very thankful for the knowledge and time they give us.”

The Marines are committed maintaining a good relationship with the Japan Self-Defense Force, according to Jackson. The educated leaders of the JGSDF plan to adopt U.S. military equipment, such as the AAV, for their force, and the Marines help to prepare them.

“It’s important to be accommodating to our host nation,” said Jackson. “We are honored to share what we have and demonstrate the capabilities we have in order for (the JGSDF) to continue to grow their force.”
