CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Marines and sailors with 2nd Marine Logistics Group welcomed their new sergeant major during a relief and appointment ceremony aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Dec. 12.
Sergeant Maj. George W. Young, Jr., the outgoing sergeant major for 2nd MLG, turned the Sword of Office over to Sgt. Maj. Darryl A. Cherry, the incoming sergeant major.
During his speech, Brig. Gen. Charles G. Chiarotti, the commanding general of 2nd MLG, spoke about the expectations of a sergeant major and about Sgt. Maj. Young’s conduct while serving as sergeant major. He described Young as a command’s ideal sergeant major.
“He’s been found worthy of being amongst those that fall in the very top tier of our enlisted ranks,” said Chiarotti. “Sergeant Maj. Young epitomizes all that we desire and hope for in our sergeants major. He is an example for all; just look at the Marines and sailors that he’s been charged to lead.”
Chiarotti directed the end of his speech to Cherry, explaining that Young had left him with a big responsibility.
Cherry, who has been the director for the Staff Noncommissioned Officers Academy, Quantico, Va., served as a first sergeant for 9th Engineer Support Battalion and the first sergeant for Company C, 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion, prior to taking on his current position.
“Since we found out that I was coming, you immediately reached out, mentored me and let me know some of the insights that are going on here at 2nd MLG,” said Cherry. “I totally feel prepared to take over the ranks. Sir, you are right, I do have big shoes to fill, but I’ve got big feet.”
